Iran freestyle team wins Asian Wrestling Championships

Iran freestyle wrestling team won the Asian Wrestling Championships title after claiming four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze at the Aspire Dome Hall in Doha, Qatar on Thursday.

Iran finished in top with 68 points and a total of seven medals while Japan came in second with 60 points and Kyrgyzstan went in third with 54 points.

Masoud Esmaeilpour (65kg), Peyman Yarahmadi (74kg), Alireza Karimi (86kg) and Mohammad Hossein Mohammadian (97kg) all claimed gold for Iran.

Despite winning the title in Doha, Iran Wrestling Federation President Rasoul Khadem believes the team has a couple of weaknesses and must work harder in order to compete in the bigger tournaments.

“We fielded young wrestlers in this competition so winning the title is a very good result with these wrestlers who came to Doha to gain experience but doesn’t mean that our team is ready to win any title. We know we have a couple of technical weaknesses so in order to get a good result in big tournaments we must work harder,” Iran's freestyle wrestling team coach told the reporters.

“We have 2015 World Wrestling Championships in front of us which is an important competition to book a place in 2016 Olympic Games. We have to prepare a better team for that competition in Las Vegas,” Rasoul Khadem added.
