TEHRAN -- Pop singer Behnam Safavi went into a coma on Monday after receiving chemotherapy treatment at Tehran’s Erfan Hospital.

Safavi underwent surgery earlier in July at the hospital to remove a tumor from his brain. He has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment ever since.

“As a result of the effects of the chemotherapies, he went into convulsions,” Safavi’s publicist, Milad Latifi, told the Persian service of MNA on Tuesday.

He asked Safavi’s fans to pray for his health.

In early October, the 32-year-old Safavi announced his plan to perform a concert to raise his spirits sufficiently to allow him to continue treatments.

His medical team finally permitted him to hold his concert on October 9. He once again appeared on the stage at Tehran’s Milad Tower, performing his concert sitting in a chair.

Safavi’s debut album, “Be My Love”, was released in October 2009 and a song by the same name from the collection soon became a smash hit at that time.

Two years later, he released his second album, “Calm”, which earned him a firm place in the Iranian pop music arena.

His latest collection “Extraordinary” was released in May 2014.
