TEHRAN Three members of Central Council of Islamic Iran Participation Front Party (IIPFP) here yesterday elaborated on the viewpoints, objectives and plans of the party. Speaking to reporters in a press conference, the members said that the party is not affiliated to the government. Among the major objectives of the IIPFP they referred to recovery of social and political atmosphere in the country and expansion of people's participation in settling social and economic crises.
In reply to a question by the TEHRAN TIMES reporter on a recent change in the name of the party, Mohammad Reza Khatami said that at first we chose the name of Islamic Iran Participation Front, but the Interior Ministry's Article 10 Commission of Parties did not approve the world `front' and announced that there is no article in the Parties Law suggesting the name `front' for a party.
However, the IIPFP is still using the name of Islamic Iran Participation Front which is considered as an illegal act. In a statement published in the Persian daily Salam on Monday and in a pamphlet on the party's article of association, the IIPFP again used the world front. It is surprising that although the Article 10 Commission of Parties has not approved the party to be considered as a front and since the nature of the IIPFP is not compatible with the nature of a front, which comprises different political parties, the IIPFP still insists to use the name front! Asked by the TEHRAN TIMES on President Khatami's role in the party, Khatami, brother of the President referred to the emotional and ideological links between all the IIPFP members and the president, saying that President Khatami has no organizational link with the party and he had preferred not to be a member to the party.
However, he said, the principle of our policy is supporting the president's plans and express its viewpoints on performance of the government and the president. Although the founders of the party had a great role in last May presidential elections, but they do not consider themselves as the inheritor of President Mohammad Khatami's victory and will independently view the government's plans.
Khatami rejected the news on withdrawal of the Deputy Interior Minister Mostafa Tajzadeh from the IIPFP, saying that only two members of the Central Council who have been deputies minister had withdrawn. Morteza Haji, another IIPFP member attending the press conference, said that the objective of the party which has 110 members, who have been active in political scene before and after the Islamic Revolution, is supporting the plans already announced by President Khatami Asked whether the variety of ideas and opinions among the members of the party would lead to a possible tension in the IIPFP, he said, naturally those who believe in least enforcement of their ideas, accept that all of their opinions will not be approved by the front.
Khatami reiterated that the IIPFP is committed to the principles of the Islamic Revolution and defending the independence, freedom and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Islamic system, leadership and law are the party's principles. The IIPFP is to conduct broad-based activities throughout the country, and members of other political groups and parties are free to be a member of the IIPFP, he said.
