Kenya's Moi Inaugurated After Poll Victory

NAIROBI -- Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi was sworn in on Monday for his fifth and final five-year term, promising to tackle graft and repair crumbling infrastructure and urging the opposition to accept the poll results. "Kanu (ruling party) won, democracy won and Kenyans won," Moi told his inauguration ceremony, attended by presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Benjamin Mkapa of Tanzania. The 73-year-old leader, who won a chaotic December 29 election which the opposition charges was rigged, ruled out a government of national unity as demanded by the opposition, saying it would be tantamount to returning to a one-party state.

"Why did we go into multi-party politics if we are going to form a government of national unity?" said Moi, whose ceremony was accompanied by a military parade at the Uhuru Park in the center of Nairobi watched by several thousand Kenyans. "My next government will be more sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the people. Those engaging in corruption...they should know their time is up," added Moi. (Reuter)
