TEHRAN – An exhibition of calligraphy works by Ahmad Tak bearing portraits of world famous figures such as singer Mohammadreza Shajarian, martyr Mostafa Chamran and actress Marilyn Monroe opened in Tehran’s Vaali Gallery.

The portraits bearing nastaliq-style calligraphy in an immense type size highlight a new relation between classic calligraphy and graffiti art, Tak said in a press release published on Saturday.

He noted that his exhibit named “Third Line” covers portraits, as well as abstract human and animal figures, adding, “Calligraphy has been accompanied by other components in my works leading to new productions.”

About his calligraphy on the image of the animals he said, “I have found the lines on the skin of the animals. A zebra beautifully bears positive and negative spaces for inscriptions. And the form and shape of the skin of a giraffe is also good for calligraphy.”

“I do not remember a single day that I have worked without listening to the heavenly voice of Shajarain; his voice gives credit to the music of this land,” he remarked.

“Moreover, I don’t think any Iranian individual has forgotten the image of martyr (Mostafa) Chamran and his bravery and the bravery of other martyrs,” he added.

Tak said that he has created his collection on a new style of canvas that he made specifically for this combination. “The usual forms of canvas do not allow a calligrapher to inscribe the words easily so I spent several years developing this form of canvas,” he concluded.

The exhibit will be running until October 7 at the gallery which can be found at 71 Khoddami St. off Vanak
Square.
