Majlis to Study Press Law Amendment Bill

August 3, 2000 - 0:0
TEHRAN Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) on Sunday will study a bill for amendment of parts of the Press Law.
One-urgency of the bill was approved in the Majlis two weeks ago. The Cultural Commission of the Majlis approved the bill after seven three-hour meetings. The commission has proposed to Parliament a final bill consisting of 14 items.
The last amendment to the Press Law was made on April 18, 2000, by the Fifth Majlis.
In less than two months, MPs in the Sixth Majlis proposed a new amendment, saying that the previous one could not meet needs of the Islamic Republic system and does not provide security and freedom of the press.
If approved, the bill would eliminate parts of the law in which the writer or provider of an article, aside from the managing director of the daily, would be responsible for the article.
The bill will also authorize the Press Supervisory Board to close down any daily which insults a cleric or a religious source of imitation. According to the law, the Judiciary should also probe into the case within a month.
Closure of any daily must be in accordance with the new law.
