TEHRAN The new Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), Abdolrahim Govahi, officially took office at a ceremony attended by representatives of the 10 member countries here on Sunday.
Govahi was elected to the post during the ECO summit in Tehran in June.
Talking to IRNA, Govahi said there are extensive grounds for cooperation among the ECO member countries in the fields of transportation, trade and energy.
He said that cooperation among member countries would prepare the ground for implementation of the agreements reached at the ECO summit.
He added that the project for linking energy lines and oil and gas pipeline project in the eco zone are among other important projects that are expected to be implemented through cooperation among the ECO members.
Govahi said the ECO secretariat has the main duty of following up the implementation of ECO ministerial meeting's approvals.
He expressed hope that necessary ground would be prepared for implementation of the accords.
Govahi, who replaces Onder Ozar as ECO secretary general, holds a B.S. in petroleum engineering from Iran's Abadan Institute of Technology, M.B.A. from Iran Center for Management Studies, an affiliate of Harvard business school, and Ph.D. in comparative religious studies from Uppsala, Sweden.
