Habibi Calls For Expansion of Ties With Philippines

TEHRAN First Vice President Hassan Habibi here on Tuesday voiced Tehran's interests in expanding ties with Manila.
In a meeting with the Philippines' Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Lauro Baja, he stressed that there are great potentials in both countries which can be used to pave the way for further expansion of bilateral cooperation.
Habibi also called for strengthening regional cooperation between the two states.
Referring to the issue of globalization, the Iranian official said that the idea cannot be materialized without paying due attention to the initiative of dialog among civilizations'.
Asian nations, with bright background, should be forerunners of the idea of dialog among civilizations, Habibi noted.
Terming the outcome of his meetings with the Iranian officials as fruitful, Baja said that his visit was aimed at further promoting bilateral relations.
Announcing his country's support for the initiative of dialog among civilizations, he stressed that the idea will pave the way for further understanding among all countries throughout the globe.
During the meeting, Baja handed to Habibi a written message from the Filipino president for his Iranian counterpart President Mohammad Khatami.
Also, Mohsen Aminzadeh, deputy foreign minister for Asia-Pacific affairs, after meeting with Baja said that Iran and the Philippines have excellent relations, but the economic relations have failed to keep up with the potentials of the two countries.
He said following his talks with his Philippine counterpart, trade between the two countries would be activated in the next few months adding that the Philippines is a good market for Iranian goods.
He said he agreed with Mr. Lauro about launching joint marketing to boost economic cooperation.
Lauro Baja on his part expressed pleasure with his negotiations with his Iranian counterpart and said the meeting of Tehran-Manila Joint Committee has succeeded in helping boost political economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries.
He said there is bright prospects for Tehran-Manila relations and hoped that by the time the second meeting of Tehran-Manila Joint Economic Commission is held, all the accords reached at the first meeting would be implemented.
