LONDON Hamburg SV made an extraordinary return to Europe's premier soccer competition on Wednesday when they drew 4-4 at home against Juventus on a goal-filled night of action in the Champions League.
The Germans, back in the competition after a 16-year absence, recovered from 3-1 down to lead 4-3 before Filippo Inzaghi completed his hat-trick with an 88th-minute penalty to save Juve from defeat in a pulsating Group E clash.
Otherwise the traditional powers of European soccer had it all their own way on a night when 36 goals were scored in eight matches.
Striker Andy Cole also struck a hat-trick as English champions Manchester United thumped Anderlecht 5-1 and Barcelona hammered Leeds United 4-0 in the Nou Camp thanks to a superb performance from World Player of the Year Rivaldo.
AC Milan saw off Besiktas 4-1 and Bayern Munich won 3-1 at Helsingborg in Sweden despite having a man sent off.
The only minor upset of night came in Trondheim where Norwegians Rosenborg beat Paris St. Germain 3-1.
Hamburg were given a rude awakening by Juve when Igor Tudor put the Italians ahead after just five minutes.
Ghanaian Tony Yeboah soon leveled for the Germans but Inzaghi restored Juve's lead nine minutes before the interval. The striker made it 3-1 after 53 minutes and Juve seemed home and dry.
But Mahdi Mahdavikia pulled one back for Hamburg after 65 minutes and Hans-Joerg Butt leveled for the Germans seven minutes later with a penalty.
With eight minutes left Niko Kovac looked to have won it for Hamburg but Inzaghi had the final word.
Also in Group E Nourredine Naybet's 84th-minute effort earned Spanish champions Deportivo Coruna a 1-1 draw at Panathinaikos.
One-Sided Match Cole's neat header after 15 minutes put United ahead against Anderlecht in a one-sided Group G match at Old Trafford. It also carried him past Denis Law's club record of 14 in the competition.
Denis Irwin added the second from the penalty spot after Ryan Giggs was felled and Teddy Sheringham made it three at the second attempt before the break.
Cole hit United's fourth after 50 minutes and, after Jan Koller's consolation for the Belgians, looped in another header to seal his hat-trick.
Arnold Bruggink scored PSV Eindhoven's winner in a 2-1 victory over Dynamo Kiev in the other Group G game after the Ukrainians had gone ahead in the sixth minute through Maxim Shatskikh.
In Group H Rivaldo's low drive and a peach of a Frank de Boer free-kick put Barca 2-0 ahead against injury-hit Leeds United in the Nou Camp.
Leeds had their moments but Patrick Kluivert killed them off with two more strikes in the second half.
In the same group Besiktas shocked AC Milan in the San Siro when Havuctu Tayfur converted a 20th-minute penalty.
But the Italians hit back with three goals in nine minutes before half-time from Francesco Cocu, German international Oliver Bierhoff and Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko, from the penalty spot.
Shevchenko hit Milan's fourth 13 minutes from the end.
Kuffour Sent Off In Group F Bayern Munich were 1-0 up through Mehmet Scholl against Helsingborg before defender Samuel Kuffour was sent off for dissent after disputing a penalty decision when he brought down Alvaro Santos.
Bayern 'keeper Oliver Kahn saved Roland Nilsson's penalty and the 10-man Germans added two more through Hasan Salihamidzic and Carsten Jancker before Bjorn Johansen's last minute consolation for the Swedes.
Rosenborg Trondheim had Frode Johnsen's 62 minute effort to thank for their win over PSG in the same group after Orjan Berg had canceled out the visitors' seventh-minute opener from Christian.
