Iran, Norway Discuss Cooperation for Protection of Environment

TEHRAN Iranian Vice President and Head of Department of the Environment (DOE) Ms. Ma'soumeh Ebtekar in Bergen, Norway, held talks with Norwegian Minister of the Environment Ms. Siri Bjenke on ways to develop cooperation between the two countries in promoting Kyoto Protocol. The two officials studied the ecological concerns and the necessity to protect forests.
The Iranian vice president who attended a two-day informal meeting of the environment ministers in Bergen, Norway from September 15-17 also held talks with President of Norwegian Parliament Ms. Kirsti Kolle Grondahl on the desire of both countries to exchange parliamentary delegations.
In the meantime, Ms. Ebtekar held negotiations with Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Ms. Grete Knudsen on exchange of technological know-how between Iran and Norway. The Iranian vice president also raised the issue of Tehran-Oslo scientific cooperation with the faculty of Oslo University. On the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, Ms. Ebtekar discussed ecological issues and cooperation for conservation of the environment with the Japanese and French ministers of the environment.
The environment ministers of world countries will hold a conference in The Hague on November 18 to review measures to enforce Kyoto Protocol. The international Kyoto Protocol signed in 1997 legally obliges the Western nations to cut emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) to 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2000-2012.
