Cleric: Islam Not Opposed to Arts

YASOUJ, Kohkilouyeh-Boyerahmad Province A member of the Assembly of Experts here on Saturday said that contrary to what many believe Islam is, by no means, opposed to the arts in essence. Ayatollah Seyed Keramatollah Malek-Hosseini, representative of this western province in the Assembly of Experts, made the remark while addressing a gathering of provincial artists and filmmakers.
He criticized what he termed as "inopportune and unreasonable interference" by uninformed people while elucidating on jurisprudential issues. Ayatollah Malek-Hosseini regretted that certain people, unfamiliar with religious tenets, speak of Islam as a religion that opposes the arts. But, he continued, the truth is that Islam has its own views on every single aspect of life, and has a whole range of advises to guide human beings in their personal conduct as well as in their economic and political life.
He underlined the artistic talents of the youth in the province and said that if enough investment can be made to further develop these talents they can attain greater achievements in the various artistic fields. Ayatollah Malek-Hosseini further called on the country's filmmakers and others in the area of the cinema to venture more in the production of educational and intellectual films so as to cultivate the talents of the young generation.
He said that although some of the films that are produced in the West depict objectionable scenes, they nonetheless have educational lessons to convey.
