Murder-Suicide Highlights Grim Minority Tradition

HANOI An ethnic minority Vietnamese woman killed two of her children and then took her own life after she discovered her husband had committed murder, state media reported Friday. Trieu Thi Dieu, 26, of the Dao Ethnic group, poisoned her eight-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son before drinking the lethal concoction herself, Nong Thon Ngay Nay (countryside today) newspaper reported.
A two-year-old son who was fed the drink, a notorious poison made of boiled leaves called "La Ngon", was saved by neighbors, it said. Dieu's murder-suicide was in apparent reaction to news her husband had been arrested for murdering two villagers, the paper said. Police in Yen Bai Province. (DPA)
