Iranian President Confers With Japanese Industry Minister

TOKYO -- President Mohammad Khatami here Thursday held talks with Japanese Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Takeo Hiranuma on economic and technological cooperation.
President Khatami said Iran and Japan would utilize the each other's potentials to convert current trade into strategic cooperation in the field of infrastructural sector of economy and technology.
He said Tehran welcomes Japanese private sector's participation in Iran's Third Five-Year Development Plan (2000-2005) adding that Iran has launched effective privatization programs.
The Iranian president said the government has carried out programs to improve the taxation system, banking and financial regulations and guaranteed repatriation of the capital and proceeds of foreign investments in Iran which paved the way for the Japanese investors to take part in Iran's development projects.
He said the Japanese financial institutes are expected to provide Iran with trade insurance facility to support bilateral transactions.
President Khatami said joint investment in a third country is another ground for Iran-Japan economic cooperation adding that Iran welcomes Japan's effective presence in the markets of West Asia and regards it as an opportunity for Japan to undertake active part in fostering peace and stability in the region.
He said the agreement reached between the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Iran-based Naftiran Intertrade Co. Ltd.
(NICO) on offering $three billion facility to Iran for three consecutive years from 2001 is a breakthrough and hoped that the agreement would take effect soon.
Hiranuma said Japan supports the initiative of "dialogue of civilizations" (put forward by President Khatami) and the process of democracy underway in Iran adding that the policy adopted by the Iranian government has promoted Iran's status in the international community and Japan appreciates it.
The Japanese minister said Iran is an important power in the Middle East and Japan is a great economic power in East Asia so that the two countries would have mutual cooperation in the field of energy serving not only mutual interests but also that of the entire world.
He said Iran and Japan have reached a good agreement in the oil and gas sector especially in developing Azadegan oil field and hoped that cooperation in the energy sector would provide a bright symbol of Tehran-Tokyo cooperation.
He said Japan is willing to transfer technology to Iran.
