IUJ condemns ‘heinous’ killing of journalists in southern Lebanon
The International Union of Journalists (IUJ) has issued a strongly-worded statement condemning the targeted killing of two journalists in southern Lebanon, calling the incident a grave violation of international humanitarian law and an attack on press freedom.
This is the text of the statement:
The International Union of Journalists (IUJ) strongly condemns the targeted killing of journalists Fatima Ftouni of Al Mayadeen and Ali Shoeib of Al Manar in southern Lebanon. According to reports, both journalists were traveling in a clearly identifiable civilian vehicle when it was struck in what appears to be a deliberate attack attributed to Israeli forces.
This heinous act represents a grave violation of international humanitarian law, which explicitly guarantees the protection of journalists operating in conflict zones. Targeting media professionals who are performing their duty to inform the world is not only unlawful but an attack on the fundamental principles of press freedom and the public’s right to know.
The IUJ calls for:
* An independent and transparent international investigation into this incident
* Accountability for those responsible for this targeted attack
* Immediate measures to ensure the safety and protection of journalists working in conflict areas
We stand in solidarity with the families, colleagues, and media organizations of the victims during this painful time. The international community must not remain silent as journalists continue to pay the ultimate price for bringing truth from the frontlines.
The IUJ reiterates that journalism is not a crime, and those who seek to silence it through violence must be held accountable under international law.
