Lavrov says ‘old world order’ is crumbling, urges end to war on Iran

TEHRAN - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said the global system is undergoing a profound transformation, warning of a “teardown” of the “old world order” amid intensifying competition for international leadership.

Speaking at a meeting of the Russian International Affairs Council, Lavrov also called for an immediate halt to U.S. and Israeli aggression against Iran, emphasizing that attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure are unacceptable under any circumstances.

The illegal U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, which began on Feb. 28, has entered the second month. The war on Iran has so led to hundreds of people, mostly civilians.

Iran’s Red Crescent Society has also announced that so far 105,000 non-military targets have suffered damages.

Only in Tehran, the RSC said, about 40,000 residential houses and shops have either sustained damages or completely destroyed.

Israel has also started striking infrastructure in Iran, bombarding steel complexes, cement factories, petrochemical plants, etc.

On March 30, U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his threat to “blow up” a range of civilian infrastructure in Iran, including all of the country’s desalination plants.

“Russia calls for an immediate end to U.S. and Israeli aggression against Iran,” Lavrov said, adding that the use of force against civilian populations, whether in Iran or across member states of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council, cannot be justified.

Lavrov also signaled Moscow’s willingness to play a mediating role, saying Russia is prepared to help de-escalate tensions and bring the situation back to a diplomatic track. “We are ready to provide mediation and other forms of assistance,” he noted.

The Russian diplomat also accused Washington and Tel Aviv of attempting to undermine Iran’s efforts to normalize relations with its Arab neighbors, adding that they are seeking to sow divisions among the Persian Gulf states.

He further criticized U.S. diplomacy, describing attempts to use negotiations as a cover for military action against Iran as “dishonest,” and warned that some countries are asserting territorial claims without legal basis, contributing to growing global instability.

While Trump claims negotiations are underway with Iran, the United States is simultaneously deploying more military assets to the region and dispatching additional troops.
