Democrats Reject Republican Recount "Compromise"

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Democrat Al Gore's campaign on Tuesday rejected out of hand a "compromise" proposal by Republican spokesman James Baker that is aimed at ending the deadlock over the U.S. presidential race.
"That was no offer. That was Baker's interpretation of Florida law, which is up to the Florida courts to do," a democratic source said.
The source said it seemed ironic that Baker made the proposal shortly before a Florida state judge was due to rule on a request by the Democrats to allow a manual recount of votes in certain Florida counties to proceed.
The source said a formal comment from the Gore campaign on Baker's proposal would come shortly from Gore representative Bill Daley in Washington.
