TEHRAN The Islamic Coalition Association has said it would field a candidate for the may presidential elections in Iran.
Deputy political head of the association, Assadollah Badamchian, said his office would introduce a contender, but did not reveal the name.
The secretary of the association, Habibollah Asgarowladi, has once run for president, but came out a loser.
Badamchian also expressed his association's concern over the reappointment of Deputy Interior Minister Mostafa Tajzadeh to head next year's presidential elections.
"We are sorry that Tajzadeh, despite so many violations in the Tehran election, was reinstated as the head of the 2001 polls," he said in the southern city of Yasouj.
"The people and public demand will however have the final say," Badamchian added.
The announcement is the first virtual challenge to reformers who still have to have the candidacy of popular harbinger President Mohammad Khatami confirmed.
Despite an earlier announcement of his intention to try again in next year's elections, Khatami later sounded off his doubts on whether he would participate in the elections following an outcry from rivals that his initial announcement was precipitated.
