Overcrowding of Drug Offenders in Prisons a Chronic Hurdle to Reform Works: Bakhtiari
December 16, 2000 - 0:0
QOM Head of the Prisons Organization Seyed Morteza Bakhtiari said on Wednesday the overcrowding of the drug-related prisoners was a great problem slowing the reform tasks in the prisons.
Speaking in the ceremony held to inaugurate the Qom Province Penitentiary and Correctional Center, Bakhtiari said 75 percent of the prisoners in some of the country's prisons are the drug-related offenders.
If the population of the drug offenders were not so large, the government could address most of the problems now facing the prisons and penitentiary centers, the official said.
He hoped that special camps be built for the drug offenders so that the overcrowding problem be solved.
The Qom center, built in an area of 2,200 sq.m was reconstructed with a cost of 150 million rials.
