TEHRAN MPs will urge Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi to place the students, arrested in the Tehran University dormitory case, on the list of those deserving commuted sentences during 10-Day-Dawn (January 31-February 10) celebrations.

10-Day-Dawn marks the anniversary of the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Rapporteur of the Majlis commission in charge of implementing Article 90 of the Constitution, Mohammad Dadfar told IRNA here Saturday that it was not yet clear whether the request to that end will be submitted in writing by the MPs to Ayatollah Shahroudi or would be conveyed to him by Majlis Speaker Mahdi Karrubi.

In the dormitory case only students were punished and jailed, but nobody (the Law Enforcement Forces (LEF)) or the other camp was punished and the court dealing with the plainclothesmen's case has not yet started its hearings,'' protested Dadfar.

It is not morally or ethically prudent to keep students in prisons, said Dadfar, adding that they (the student detainees) were the youth who came to the scene by chance or unwillingly and this caused a disruption in their education.

The MP said the Judiciary system should deal with the issue passionately by taking the age of the detainees and disruption in their education into consideration in order to secure their freedom.

The dormitory incident was triggered when the Law Enforcement Forces (LEF) clashed with students demonstrating against the closure of the daily *****Salam***** in July 1999.

Bench 7 of Tehran's Military Court on July 11 handed down a verdict acquitting the former commander of Tehran's Law Enforcement Forces (LEF), Farhad Nazari, along with 17 of his co-accused of all charges against them for forcibly entering a Tehran University dormitory in July last year.
