Italians Return to the Polls to Elect Key Mayors
May 28, 2001 - 0:0
ROME Italians in major cities will choose new mayors on Sunday in runoff rounds where the center-left coalition is seeking consolation after last week's crushing general election defeat, Reuters said. Six million Italians are eligible to vote to choose new administrations in three of the country's biggest cities -- Rome, Naples and Turin -- and in other 74 towns where no candidate won an outright majority in the first round on May 13. Center-left candidates were ahead in the first round of the three key mayoral contests but the race appears close and will likely be decided by a handful of votes.
