Expert on Turkish Economic Crisis

TEHRAN An expert expressed his views on the current economic situation in Turkey, the agreement signed between the Turkish government and the IMF, and other major problems prevailing in this country.

On the economic programs of Kemal Dervis, he said that Dervis signed the deal with the IMF in order to decrease the budget deficit.

Two weeks ago Dervis held a meeting with the leader of the Union of Turkish Laborers, Bairam Miran, and the latter called for an increase in workers' wages, he pointed out.

But Dervis opposed his suggestion and warned Bairam that generals may once again sweep to power if they continue to insist on wage increases, the expert said.

If the talks going ahead between Dervis and the Union of Turkish Laborers reach a deadlock, then more violence would erupt in Turkey, he predicted.

He said that the crisis will escalate due to the large number of Turkish workers, more than half a million of whom are employed in the public sector.

He said that any agreement which leads to higher wages will inflict a devastating blow to Dervis's IMF policy.
