IAAF Planning Two-Day Grand Prix Final

EUGENE, Oregon The International Amateur Athletic Federation's (IAAF) annual Grand Prix final will be held over two days from 2003 and at the same venue every year, IAAF President Lamine Diack said on Sunday.

"All events will be in the Grand Prix final, which will be a two-day final, and the location will be the same for the final (each year)," Diack said after the Prefontaine Classic Grand Prix.

The IAAF currently alternates its Grand Prix events by staging, for example, the 100 meters one year and the 200 in the next. The designated events are contested for extra points at a one-day final, Reuters reported.

The Golden League series, currently seven meetings, would also probably be reduced to five with the sixth being the Grand Prix final, Diack added.

The changes would take place after the current contract for the series expired in 2002.

Diack said a German city, which he declined to identify, had approached the IAAF about hosting the Grand Prix finals for 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Diack also said he was disappointed the U.S. federation had not changed its rules to allow 200 and 400 meters world record holder Michael Johnson compete on the U.S. 4x400 relay team at the Edmonton World Championships without first running in the American trials.
