GUWAHATI, India -- More than 50 people were injured in the troubled northeast Indian state of Manipur as violent protests over a government truce with separatist rebels raged through the night, police said on Tuesday. Director General of Police A.A. Siddique told Reuters by telephone from the Manipur state capital Imphal that rioters -- defying a day-and-night curfew -- ransacked the homes of three members of the state parliament and a federal minister. He said more than 50 youths were hurt when security forces fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, who marched through the streets of Imphal chanting slogans against the truce.
