Six Nobel Peace Prize Winners to Attend Peace Forum in Taipei
According to DPA, the six Nobel laureates are former Polish president Lech Walesa, former South African president Fredrik W. de Klerk, former Costa Rican President Oscar Arias Sanzhez, Betty Willimas (Ireland), Joseph Rotblat (UK) and Jody Williams (U.S.).
Some 60 foreign parliamentarians will attend the forum, called Voice of Taiwan: Peace and Love. The forum is organized by the Taiwan Alliance for Global Peace (TAFG) and three UN nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
Lu is Tafg's founder.
"The forum opens on August 15, the day World War II ended in 1945.
Although WWII ended half a century ago, war has not stopped. There was the civil war in China, Korean War, Vietnam War, Israeli-Arab clashes, Iran-Iraqi battles and operation desert storm," she said.
"So the theme of the forum is to call for peace across the Taiwan strait and all over the world," she said.
At the end of the forum, delegates will write a letter to Chinese President Jiang Zemin, urging him to remove missiles from the coast facing Taiwan, and write a letter to the United Nations, urging the UN to make greater effort to end war.
The forum will suggest the UN declare Kinmen, a Taiwan island in the Taiwan strait, a demilitarized zone to ease tension across between Taiwan and China.
