On the Occasion of Clean Air Day If Tehran Coughs
Although it was cold, I opened my window and the clear air was a delight, there was no sign of the usual smog, the lead, the carbon monoxide and other noxious gases and filth.
The clouds were white and beautiful, and because of last night's snow were shining. The sky was bright and blue; I think that perhaps God must like the color very much since we are surrounded by beautiful shades of it.
On the bus, all the windows were closed because everybody was complaining about the cold. Eventually somebody at the back said asked that one of the windows be opened otherwise everyone will get ill. A window was opened and the fresh air entered but a few minutes later the exhaust smoke of a passing van made me cough. My throat was burning I looked up at the sky and the beautiful blue sky was turning a horrible gray-brown.
I thought that if Tehran starts coughing due to this huge amount of smoke then what would happen? I read in the newspaper that nearly 4600 people die every year because of the polluted air in Tehran.
If Tehran could talk it would have said "I don't want to continue living like this, to whom should I complain?
