JAMMU, India -- Unidentified gunmen killed 10 members of a Muslim family -- including four children -- in the rebellion-torn Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, police said.

The attack took place near Mendhar in the mountainous Poonch district, a Muslim-dominated area bordering Pakistan.

"Details are awaited, officials have rushed to the spot," a police official said in the winter capital, Jammu, 256km (160 miles) from the place of the attack, Reuters reported.

Kashmir is at the center of a dangerous military stand-off between Pakistan and India. New Delhi has demanded Islamabad make good on a pledge to crack down on Islamic militants operating from its soil in the Himalayan region.

More than 30,000 people have died since a separatist revolt erupted in late 1989 in Jammu and Kashmir, India's only Muslim majority state. Islamabad has said it is committed to giving moral and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people in what it calls their struggle for self-determination.
