ADO-EKITI, Nigeria -- A weekend hunting trip in Nigeria went wrong when a hunter mistook a friend for an antelope and shot him dead, police said Monday. The pair left their homes on Friday night and had already bagged a large local rodent and two spider monkeys, before the badly-sighted hunter thought he saw an antelope moving in the bushes. Raising his gun, he fired into the brush, only to discover that what was moving was not an antelope but his best friend, 35-year-old Sunday Adebayo, Ekiti state police spokesman Emmanuel Ighodalo told reporters. The hunter, in a distraught state, immediately ran to the police to hand himself in and was being detained Monday for questioning, AFP said.
