Quake Jolts Tabas

YAZD -- Two earthquakes measuring 4.1 and 3.3 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, hit Tabas, in Yazd Province, at 11:44 and 16:49 local times (714 and 1219 GMT) respectively on Friday.

The Seismological Base of Yazd, affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, registered the epicenters of the quakes at 40km northeast of Tabas.

No casualty or damage has yet been reported in this regard.

Tabas is located some 360km east of Yazd.

Iran sits on some of the world's seismic fault lines and is often shaken by earthquakes of various magnitudes.

Since 1991 over 950 earthquakes have hit the country, resulting in the death of 17,600 people and injury of 53,300 others, IRNA said.
