BOGOTA -- Fighting this week between revolutionary armed forces of Colombia rebels and far-right wing paramilitaries left more than 100 people dead in Valparaiso, the town's Mayor Luis Carlos Becerra said Saturday.

Becerra's figures come in contrast to army figures which placed the number of casualties in the southern municipality at 15.

"The number of victims is significantly higher: We are talking about more than 100 dead in the clashes," he told Caracol Radio, citing local residents who fled the fighting, AFP reported.

A number of civilians caught in five days of fighting that began August 9 were also killed and others are missing, according to the mayor. Among the victims was a former mayor of neighboring Curillo, Edgar Pinto.

A spokesman for the army's 12th brigade said Tuesday that 15 bodies had been found in the area, while police said that 30 people had died. The International Committee of the Red Cross said it had no figures for the toll.
