ECO Welcomes Iran's Proposal to Set Up Fund for Afghanistan
Adeli said Iran views Afghan reconstruction as a proper and historical opportunity for regional cooperation, deeming it as effective in restoring regional stability and security.
Underlining the need to expand regional cooperation, Adeli said that unless the states in the region liberalize trade, the national economies of these states will not move in a positive direction.
The 12th meeting of ECO Council of Ministers opened here on Saturday in a ceremony attended by ECO Secretary General Mojtaba Arastu.
In his address, Arastu said there are some strong and weak points to achieving ECO goals and asked the participants to provide the organization with remedial measures.
Referring to the important developments taken place since the 11th COM meeting in Dushanbe in May 2001, Arastu pointed out that the return of rule of law and normalcy in Afghanistan is the most important development of all and the country is now ready to play its due role as a crucial link in the revival of the centuries old trade link between China, Central Asia, and South Asia.
He emphasized that Afghanistan can re-emerge as a bridge between the land-locked countries and the coastal states of ECO.
The issue of reconstruction of Afghanistan is among the important agenda items of the 12th COM, IRNA reported.
Arastu said the 4th ECO ministerial meeting on transport and communications was recently held in Izmir, which reviewed the implementation of the program of action for the ECO decade of transport and communications (1998-2007).
He said the organization is earnestly engaged in creating an infrastructure, capable of having access to the global markets by shortening the routes.
He added that in this regard, a three-pronged approach had been actively pursued to achieve the goal which aims to building physical infrastructure, creating an environment for intra-regional trade and building institutional capacity for ECO in its secret ariat and within the member states.
He also referred to the container train service from Istanbul to Almaty (Kazakhstan) as one of the major achievements of the organization so far and announced that it is expected that regular passenger train service would start from October this year.
