Iran's proposed resolution entitled "strengthening of multilateralism in the area of disarmament and non-proliferation" was approved by the United Nations First Committee, titled as Disarmament and International Security, on Friday.

The resolution, which calls for collective measures by all UN member states to prevent and eliminate threats against world peace and to stop aggressions, was approved by 100 votes for, mainly by Non-Aligned Movement states, and 11 votes against at the committee.

The United Nations, as is stipulated in its Charter, is responsible for any step to preserve peace and security at the international arena.

Besides, UN members can cooperate within the world body to resolve international problems, including the issue of disarmament.

That is the reason why the Islamic Republic has in several articles in the resolution proposed reinforcing multilateralism, as the basic foundation in disarmament and non-proliferation discussions.

Therefore, any decision-making regarding the issue of disarmament and the control of arms will no longer be restricted to major powers. All in the same breath, resorting to any unilateral measure or lodging baseless allegations on nations will be basically cancelled.

Still, U.S. officials have over the past years seriously jeopardized the international security in several cases by taking unilateral steps to violate conventions on non-proliferation and development of weapons of mass destruction.

The U.S. government, as the world's major contributor to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, accuses countries that refuse to bow to its policies of trying to acquire these facilities. This is while the U.S. has itself provided the Zionist regime with the deadliest weapons.

U.S. unilateral approaches to attack Iraq, and its efforts to ignore the role of the United Nations as the guardian of international peace and security all testify the fact that U.S. will never feel committed to global campaigns to promote stability the world over.

The current policy of U.S. leaders is dangerous for international community in that it seeks to promote the logic of force instead of resorting to peaceful solutions to solve world issues.

However, Iran's proposed resolution is a manifestation of the peaceful aspirations of the Islamic Republic that have once again been welcomed by the international community.

The Islamic Republic has over the past years proposed several initiatives to reinforce world peace and stability, including the Dialog Among Civilizations and the Coalition for Peace.

The warm welcome by the international community to Iran's proposals is a sign that the world public opinion, as opposed to war-mongering policies of the White House leaders, advocates peace and friendship within the frameworks of a global coexistence.
