Czechs Start Testing Temelin

VIENNA Several thousand Austrian environmentalists blocked border crossings with the Czech Republic on Friday in protest against the imminent start-up of the Temelin Nuclear Power Plant, radio Austria international reported.
Czech border officials said the demonstrators used tractors to stop traffic in some places but had not halted all movement between the two countries. It was the fourth such blockade this month.
The Czechs have started testing Temelin and want to bring it on stream later this month or in early October, with the activation of a second reactor in about 15 months time.
Austrians have objected strongly to the activation of the Soviet-designed reactor fitted with Western control systems.
Some say the activation of the plant could complicate Czech efforts to join the European Union.
