India Still Chasing Hard Against West Indies
An unbroken sixth wicket stand of 82 between Singh Sodhi (58 not out) and Samir Dighe (24 not out) kept India in with a slim chance of victory with 15 overs left after they had lost their first four wickets within the first 15 overs.
India lost their fifth wicket when Rahul Dravid was bowled off an inside edge by Reon King for 30. He faced 32 balls and struck six fours, Reuters reported.
Sodhi in particular took the attack to the West Indian bowlers, hitting Captain Carl Hooper for two sixes, although the first should have been caught by Daren Ganga at long-on rather than helped on its way over the ropes.
India had earlier lost Sachin Tendulkar, who before the final had scored 282 runs in the tournament and been dismissed just once, for a fourth ball duck, caught off Corey Collymore.
Saurav Ganguly was trapped LBW by Collymore for 28 and the same bowler then had VVS Laxman caught off an attempted pull.
Mervyn Dillon picked up the fourth wicket, Virinder Sehwag clipping him tamely to square leg.
West Indies made 290 for six in their 50 overs. Ganga top-scored with 71 while Captain Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul both made half-centuries.
