New Canadian War Museum to Be Constructed in Ottawa

OTTAWA -- The groundbreaking for a new Canadian war museum will likely be this November, officials said Thursday, following public sparring that has bedeviled the design, location and funding of the museum.

More than 80 percent of the estimated 105 million dollars (66 million U.S. dollar) the museum's construction will cost is to be shouldered by the federal government. Donations from veterans and their families will make up the difference, AFP said.

After loud public criticism, architect Raymond Moriyami drew up a fourth set of plans for the building, to be within sight range of the Canadian parliament's "Peace Tower." The museum, to open in 2005, features a cathedral-like entrance and a lawn on the roof.

Moriyami's new design and the museum's strict focus on tributes to the Canadian military, though it is to include a gallery in memory of overrides objections from veterans, who also rejected suggestions that it should pay tribute to Canadian peacekeepers.
