European offer needs to be reformed: analyst
In separate interviews with the Mehr News Agency, MP Kazem Jalali and analysts Ali Khorram and Gholam-Hussein Taheri voiced their views about the position Iran should adopt toward the European proposal.
Spokesman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Jalali, said that Iran should not adopt a hasty approach toward the offer.
“The Europeans should realize that Iran is now a nuclear power and has basically achieved the technology to enrich uranium to 4.8 percent.
“This process is irreversible and Iran’s nuclear capabilities cannot be ignored,” he pointed out.
As a member of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the Islamic Republic has the right to make use of nuclear technology, Jalali said, adding that Europe should not deprive a country from its international rights.
What they can include in their proposal are legal ways for Iran to give assurances over the peaceful nature of its nuclear activities, he opined.
International affairs analyst, Khorram, said that the European offer needs to be reformed and should be negotiated.
“Iran should not reject the offer completely but should ask Europe to respect its achievements in uranium enrichment. It should negotiate about continuing the process of enrichment,” he commented.
Political analyst, Taheri, said that the European offer is simply meant to build a political atmosphere against Iran.
According to a draft text of the offer, Europe has asked Iran to enrich its uranium on Russian soil.
“The Russians did not want to lose their initiative over the Iranian nuclear issue and therefore tried to include their proposal for enriching Iran’s uranium within the European offer,” Taheri observed.
“The Russians are getting closer to the position of the West,” he added.
