Iran, Turkmenistan ink 7 MoUs on expansion of mutual cooperation

ASHKHABAD (IRNA) -- Visiting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad conferred here Tuesday with his Turkmen counterpart Saparmurat Niyazov on expansion of mutual relations.

At the meeting, the two sides inked seven memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on expansion of mutual cooperation.

The two presidents signed a joint statement on the 9th Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Commission Session.

In a special ceremony, the two presidents signed pertaining statement for commissioning of Bajgiran terminal on Iran-Turkmenistan common border along with an MoU on generation of electricity in both countries.

An MoU on agreements reached during the 9th Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Commission meeting was signed between Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Turkmen Minister of Internal Affairs Ahmammet Rahmanov.

The two sides officials also inked various MoUs on restoration of security at joint borders, animal husbandry, tourism and sports.

The Bajgiran terminal has been constructed at Iran's border city of Bajgiran in the northeastern province of Khorassan Razavi in a 12-hectare area at a cost of about rls 43 billion.

Located at a distance of 32 kilometers from Turkmenistan's capital of Ashkhabad, Bajgiran border terminal is regarded as the most important route connecting Iran to Turkmenistan.

The Bajgiran border terminal is located 211 kilometers from Mashhad, provincial capital of Khorassan Razavi.
