EU monitors say Aceh rebel group should be disbanded
"The party should come in six months and as soon as possible thereafter they should be considered disbanded," Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) head Pieter Feith was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Post newspaper.
Feith told reporters after meeting Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono that the formation of a political party would be a turning point for the GAM, which signed a historic peace deal with Jakarta last year.
EU-led international monitors on Friday formally ended their mission in Aceh after more than a year overseeing the fragile peace deal, which ended three decades of separatist conflict that claimed at least 15,000 lives.
Unofficial elections results in Aceh showed former GAM spokesman Irwandi Yusuf and his running mate Muhammad Nazar were likely to secure a landslide victory for the posts of governor and deputy.
The issue of GAM's dissolution surfaced after Irwandi and Nazar used some of the group's symbols during the polls earlier this month.
Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla said Friday that GAM should be disbanded, as it was expected to win the polls.
