TEHRAN – Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani said on Friday the nation’s armed forces are ready to face any threat to its nuclear installations.

"The Islamic Republic's armed forces are completely ready to confront any probable threats by the enemies," the students news agency ISNA quoted Larijani as saying after meeting top clerics in the city of Qom. However, he downplayed the possibility of Iranian nuclear facilities being hit, insisting "Our enemies do not have such power."

"Our enemies have waged a psychological war in order to make us retreat from our nuclear positions," he said.

He added that Iran welcomes any initiative to resolve its nuclear standoff with the West.

The UN Security Council passed Resolution 1737 on December 23 imposing sanctions on Iran’s trade in nuclear material and technology.

The United States is applying double standards toward Iran, but it should realize that any adventurism will create many additional problems for the region, he noted.

Tehran should act cautiously in the nuclear issue so as not to ruin the future for generations to come, he added.

There is not legal and technical problem with Iran’s nuclear dossier but the U.S. is using the Security Council as a tool, he stated.

“If the regional people take control of their destiny, many of the issues will be solved,” he added.

“At this stage, we are in sensitive situation, and Islamic awakening is needed to foil the U.S. plots and tricks,” Larijani said.
