Liberation of Khorramshahr

Two Iranian combatants walk among the helmets left by Iraqi forces in one of the streets of Khorramshahr after two days of heavy fighting which led to the liberation of the city on May 24, 1982. Iranians consider the event one of their national honors and annually celebrate this day.

A port city in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran, Khorramshahr had totally been captured by Iraqis on October 26, 1980 during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War..
