TEHRAN -- Iranian filmmaker Mohammad-Ali Farsi has recently completed production of a documentary, which scrutinizes the disappearance of “The Great Omar”, a jeweled binding of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.
The magnificent version of the Rubaiyat that was bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in England in 1911 was lost in the Titanic disaster.Recording the sound effects and the narrations for the documentary entitled “Lost Truth” will be completed in few upcoming days, Mehdi Tabatabaiinejad said in a press release on Tuesday.
The film crew traveled to England, Shiraz, Isfahan, Neyshabur, and several other places to shoot the film, which has been sponsored by the Sima Film Productions, an affiliate of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
The film also studies the efforts Edward FitzGerald made in translation of the masterpiece of the Persian literature in 1859.
Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf published the book “Lost on the Titanic -- The Story of ‘The Great Omar’” in 2001, to describe the history of the book.
About “The Great Omar”, Sangorski & Sutcliffe state on their website, “The book was undoubtedly the most ambitious bookbinding project ever undertaken by any bookbinder at any period in history.”
“It boasted over a thousand precious and semi-precious jewels, thousands of separate leather onlays and it took the firm two years of continuous work to finish.”
“Finally completed in 1911, the book was on a voyage to America when it was tragically lost in the Titanic disaster.”
