TEHRAN - The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the outcome of the Canadian general elections showed that the Canadian nation seeks to dissociate itself from “extremist” stances.

The elections were a reflection of the will of the Canadian people to distance themselves from extremist policies, ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham told Press TV.

“The Islamic Republic respects the vote and choice of the Canadian people,” she added.

Canadian Israel-friendly Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Monday conceded defeat in elections, stepping down and setting the stage for the appointment of an interim leader.

Harper gave his concession speech on Monday following his loss to Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau.
