Iran’s national volleyball team finished in fifth place in the 2017 Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship on Tuesday.

The Iranian team defeated China 3-1(15-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21) at the Tridharma Petrochemical Sports Stadium in the Indonesian city of Surabaya.

Iran fielded a U23 squad in their final preparation for the next month’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s U23 World Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

“We’ve learned a lot from the Asian Volleyball Championship. We could win a medal but underestimate Indonesia in the quarterfinals and lost to the team. It was my fault,” Juan Cichello said.

“From now on, we have to concentrate on winning World championship. I thank my players and satisfied with their performance,” the Argentine added.

Japan won the title for the second year in a row after defeating Kazakhstan 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 25-27, 25-23) in the final match.

Bronze medal went to South Korea who defeated Indonesia 3-0 (25–16, 25–21, 25–13).

The 2017 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship is the 19th edition of the Asian Men's Volleyball Championship, the biennial international men's volleyball championship of Asia organized by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC).

The competition was held at the Tridharma Petrochemical Sports Stadium of Gresik, East Java, Indonesia from 24 July to 1 August 2017.
