Khatami: Effective Planning Needed for Flood-Hit Mazandaran Prov.

SARI Iran's President Seyed Mohammad Khatami at the end of his one-day trip to the flood stricken province of Mazandaran northern Iran, said that effective planning is needed to compensate for the losses occurred due to the recent devastating floods in the province. Talking to journalist, he said that it is hoped that with the cooperation and participation of the nobel people of Mazandaran, major steps would be taken towards solving problems of the flood victims.
He also said that the damage to property is estimated to be more than Rls.400 billion with 50 people losing their lives. Khatami said "In order to compensate for the losses, in addition to financial aid rendered by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the government donated Rls.65 billion with Rls.80 billion more in the form of credits from Iranian banks." He also noted that further expert studies are needed to find out the causes of this national tragedy and to lessen the impact of future natural disasters.
Meanwhile, the provincial Natural Disasters Headquarters in its Tuesday session, presided over by President Khatami, worked out ways to compensate hefty damage inflicted on northern province of Mazandaran by recent floods. Addressing the session, where ministers of Construction Jihad Mohammad Saeedikia and of Housing and Urban Development Ali Abdolalizadeh, leadership envoy to Mazandaran and Head of the Environment Protection Organization Masoomeh Ebtekar were present, President Khatami hoped for taking fundamental steps to remove problems and compensate the incurred damage through efforts of people and government.
He cautioned that the country is prone to natural disasters, prompting adoption of strategies to check repetition of such accidents compensate for the past and guarantee future of the public. Meanwhile, IRNA reported that President Khatami's inspection tour of the flood-stricken areas has boosted morale of the people who were hit by the killer floods some two weeks ago. During his day-long visit to the flood-hit areas, the president called on the officials and the nation to assist the people and help alleviate their sufferings.
Also, Head of the Public Relations Office of Basij (volunteer) Forces of Mazandaran Province announced Tuesday that over 16,000 Basij personnel have participated in the mopping-up operations in the city of Neka. Qodratollah Razi further said so far 40,000 square meters of land have been mopped up and 350 forces actively took part in search operations for the dead bodies. Meantime, the Danish Embassy in Tehran made available to the United Nations Office in Tehran an Amount of $30,000 in support of the victims of the flood.
