Hickman Focuses on 100 Meters Butterfly
September 10, 2000 - 0:0
SYDNEY British swimmer James Hickman withdrew on Saturday from the Olympic 200 meters individual medley event to concentrate on a better medal shot in the 100 meters butterfly.
The British team said the 24-year-old had decided to restrict himself to three events at the games the 100 and 200 meters butterfly and the 4x100 meters medley relay.
The 100 meters butterfly semifinal is on the same night as the 200 meters individual medley final and Hickman believes he has a far greater chance of glory in the butterfly event.
He took a silver medal in the 200 meters butterfly and a bronze in the 100 butterfly at July's European championships in Helsinki.
He was last in the 200 individual medley final.
Hickman, a 200 meters individual medley finalist at the 1998 world championships, will not be replaced in the event as he was the only Briton to achieve the qualifying standard.
