Iraqi Kurdish Leader Arrives in Ankara for Talks
October 5, 2000 - 0:0
ANKARA Massoud Barzani, leader of one of the two Kurdish groups that control northern Iraq, arrived in Ankara late Tuesday night for talks with Turkish officials.
The leader of the Kurdish Democratic Party is to meet Turkish intelligence officials, Foreign Ministry diplomats and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit.
Diplomatic sources said that high on the agenda of his talks will be the future of sanctions imposed by the United Nations on Iraq following the 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
Talks will also dwell on the continuing push by the KDP's rival Kurdish group in northern Iraq, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) to remove Kurdish Worker's Party (PKK) militants from the area.
The KDP has been a long-term ally of Ankara in its struggle against the PKK, which in the past used northern Iraq as a springboard to launch attacks inside Turkey proper.
