TOKYO President Mohammad Khatami of Iran and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori will issue a joint statement here in the next two weeks, Japanese sources said here on Saturday.
President Khatami is to pay an official visit to Japan on October 31 at the invitation of the Japanese premier.
The sources added that in order to pave the way for opening a new chapter in bilateral relations, Iran and Japan are determined to draw up a plan of action.
In the joint statement, the Japanese premier is to announce his country's full support for Iran's Third Five-Year Development Plan, the sources said adding that the leaders of the two countries will also undertake to strengthen bilateral political ties.
Meanwhile, Japan Times, close to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, wrote in its Saturday issue that Japan's economic assistance for Afghan refugees in Iran and the country's support for Iran's anti-drug campaign will also be on the agenda of talks between the two countries' senior officials.
According to officials, during his visit to Tokyo, the Iranian president is to invite the Japanese prime minister to visit Tehran.
President Khatami will be Iran's first head of state to visit Japan in the past 42 years.
