Babolsar to host new museum dedicated to Persian carpet restoration
TEHRAN--The world’s first carpet restoration museum will be inaugurated in Babolsar city, Mazandaran province, during Cultural Heritage Week in May 2026.
Head of Mazandaran Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department Hossein Izadi announced the issuance of a license for the world’s first carpet repairing museum in Babolsar, Miras Aria reported.
He said that the grounds have been prepared for official inauguration of the museum.
Stating that the license was issued with the follow-up of Mazandaran Cultural Heritage Department for Museum Affairs, he added that Babolsar carpet restoration museum has been established with the aim of preserving the original and ancient art of carpet repairing, introducing its place in Iranian handicrafts, and transferring the knowledge and experience of the masters of the field to the future generations.
The tools, works, traditional methods of carpet restoration, and the evolution of the traditional art will be exhibited in the museum, he pointed out.
Izadi continued that the establishment of the museum not only plays an important role in preserving and introducing the traditional arts, but also has the potential to become a center for education, research, and development of cultural tourism across Mazandaran province, and can attract the attention of art and cultural heritage enthusiasts from all over the country.
He considered the establishment of the world's first specialized carpet repairing museum a valuable step towards preserving the intangible heritage and reviving the country's traditional arts.
Izadi stated that the carpet repairing art is part of the cultural identity of Iranians, and the establishment of the museum can make the cultural position of Mazandaran province more prominent at the national and international levels.
He announced the purpose of issuing the license for the carpet restoration museum to support the specialized and thematic museums, and said: “This museum can become one of the country's leading and unique museums in terms of content and functionality.”
Also, Hamidreza Akbari, founder and director of Babolsar carpet restoration museum, pointed out the importance of launching the museum and explained that carpet repairing is not just a technical skill, but also a part of the cultural identity, indigenous knowledge, and lifestyle of Iranians, which unfortunately has received less attention in recent years.
He added that creating the world's first specialized carpet repairing museum is an effort to record, document, and transfer the experience of the masters of the art to the future generations. “We hope that this museum can become a center for education, research, and attracting cultural tourists.”
