Turkmen Officials Interested in Boosting Ties With Iran: Minister

ASHKHABAD -- Iranian Minister of Roads and Transportation Mahmoud Hojjati, at the end of a four-day visit to Turkmenistan, said here on Friday evening that Turkmen officials, President Saparmurat Niyazov in particular, are very much interested in further expanding of relations with Iran.
He made the remark prior to his departure from this Turkmen capital city where he headed a delegation which participated in the fifth session of the two countries' joint commission.
Referring to his meeting with the Turkmen president, the Iranian minister said that President Niyazov laid stress on the importance of Tehran-Ashkhabad joint cooperation for the extraction of hydrocarbons from the Caspian Sea and for the sea's five littoral states to reach an agreement on its use and exploitation.
Hojjati further said that President Niyazov has asked President Mohammad Khatami to consider visiting Turkmenistan in the near future.
Further to the meeting, the minister said that an agreement to increase Turkmen gas exports to the Islamic Republic was finalized, and that certain problems facing Iranian companies doing business in Turkmenistan were also reviewed.
Issues related to transport, oil, gas, energy, industries, agriculture and water were also reviewed by the two countries' officials during the joint economic session which yielded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the two sides, Hojjati added.
According to earlier report, Iran and Turkmenistan signed here Friday an economic memorandum of understanding at the end of their Fifth Joint Economic Commission which lasted four days.
The MOU was signed by Iran's Minister of Roads and Transportation Mahmoud Hojjati and Trukmen Vice President for Transportation Affairs Khodaygoli Khalikow.
The two sides agreed to follow up the laying of an oil pipeline between Iran and Turkmenistan and cooperate on extraction of hydrocarbon from the Caspian Sea. They were satisfied with the Korpedzhe-Kurtkui gas pipeline.
The Iranian minister arrived in Turkmenistan on Wednesday at the head of an Iranian delegation.
In his meeting with his Turkmen counterpart in ashkhabad Hojjati said that the project of piping the Turkmen gas to Iran, building the friendship dam and the projects under construction by the Iranian companies in the field of road building, telecom and drinking water network are the areas of the current cooperation between the two countries.
