TOKYO -- The Japanese government announced Tuesday that deposed Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori has Japanese citizenship after confirming that his name is registered in a family record in Kumamoto, his parents' hometown in southwestern Japan. The announcement ended a three-week dispute over Fujimori's nationality after his sudden arrival in Japan November 17 after briefly attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Brunei. Now that his citizenship has been determined, Fujimori is free to remain legally in Japan. Fujimori, whose Japanese name is Kenya Fujimori, is a second- generation Japanese-Peruvian.
His parents moved to Peru from Japan's southwestern Kumamoto prefecture.
