TEHRAN Majlis Speaker Mahdi Karrubi here Sunday warned against plots by the enemies to create division in the ranks of the society, adding that the country's political groups should avoid leveling accusations against each other.

Talking on the anniversary of the Unity Day Among Universities and Seminaries, Karrubi referred to a longstanding schism between these two establishments in the past in the wake of the enemies' conspiracies to create divisions among them.

"The late Imam Khomeini, thanks to his prudent leadership, managed to bridge a large portion of this gap and neutralize the enemies' plots in this connection to some extent, bringing dismay to them," he said.

Karrubi, however, stated that efforts were still in the making to distance seminarians from academics.

"To confront the infiltration of the aliens into these circles, we should unite seminaries and universities... This unity will materialize through reciprocal understanding and respect, amity among one another as well as in the wake of opening the arena for a liberal thinking," he said.

The parliamentary speaker enjoined the country's political groups to practice more tolerance and avoid linking one another to antirevolutionary persuasions.

"We should not call a cleric a reactionary as soon as he makes a statement. In the same way, we should not consider an academic a secular when he presents an idea. We should, instead, have dialogue and strive for creating an amicable atmosphere," he added.

"Every one of us, through respecting one another's ideas and living in peace, should try to drive ahead the lofty objectives of the system and the Islamic Revolution," Karrubi said.

He paid homage to the memory of martyr Mohammad Mofatteh who was assassinated by terrorist antirevolutionary elements on December 17, 1979.

He praised Mofatteh's tireless efforts in forging strong ties among seminaries and universities, adding, although short-lived, he played a memorable role in view of his scientific efforts as well as enlightenment of the country.

Karrubi cited the Founder of the Islamic Revolution the late Imam Khomeini's statements, saying, "Unity among seminaries and universities is the most fundamental work for implementing the objectives of the revolution and the government as well as bringing congruity to the society."

Karrubi also called for an all-out efforts to let Iranian women achieve their rights. He was speaking at a meeting with the eleven-member fraction of women in Majlis.

Referring to the distinguished role of women in different areas, Karrubi said, "Extensive efforts should be made so that women can get their rights in all cultural, political, social and economic fields."

He added, "It is a fact that when a culture is dominant in a given society for a long time, much time and effort is needed to rectify it and when the culture is mixed with religious beliefs, then it requires even more accurate and comprehensive study."

Karrubi pointed to the role of Imam Khomeini in modifying cultural issues and changing the prevalent outlooks about women and said the late Imam, using his own greatness and wisdom, managed to create a new and positive attitude toward women and upgrade the level of culture in them.

Majlis speaker pointed to the existing sensitivities in society and the importance of the presence of women in various arenas and said women issues should not be politicized rather all aspects of national interests should be considered and issues should be dealt with prudently.

Karrubi said Majlis is prepared to pass laws for promoting the role of women and stressed that obstacles should be removed without stirring up sensitive issues.

At the meeting some of the members of women fraction in Majlis outlined the problems facing women in society and called for remedies based on religious, cultural and social norms and the preservation of principles and values.
